The Charity operates under the Royal Charter of the Society of Licensed Victuallers dated 3rd May 1836 and Supplemental Charters of 5th February 1999 and of 29th June 2012.
Our Trustees (and we have between 12 and 18) are responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the Charity. Trustees emanate from our membership base, which is part of our constitution. Our Trustees delegate power, within agreed budgets and responsibilities, to committees that oversee the delivery of its Licensed Trade Charity Services policy, Education policy and Fundraising activities. The day to day running of the Charity is delegated to the Chief Executive.
Skills and Training
Our trustees have the skills the charity needs now, and in the future. We conducted a full skills audit recently to ensure we were fit for the future and to identify training needs. We regularly update skills with training which are relevant to the various areas of our work. We also actively co-opt people with the desired skills to the Trustee Body. On joining the Charity, all Trustees follow a general induction programme.
Our Trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose, with reasonable accuracy at any time, the financial position of the Charity and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011.
The Trustees are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the Charity and therefore, for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud.
The charity’s constitution also dictates that trustees and members of committees emanate from a membership base.
