As well as undertaking a classroom education and qualifications at LVS Hassocks, Amy is progressing towards her goal of a career in hairdressing thanks to an invaluable work experience placement.
Once a week Learning Support Assistant Rebecca takes Amy to Hair Essentials in Burgess Hill, where she spends the afternoon learning new skills with hairdresser Abigail.
Amy is gaining the full hairdressing experience and being shown how to wash, style, curl and a range of other techniques which will be invaluable in helping her gain her independence in future. This term she will move on to integrating more with customers at the salon, so the placement will not only increase her career prospects but also help her practice social skills in a public environment.
Amy said: “When I joined LVS Hassocks four years ago I did not stay in lessons and often ran off. Now I stay in all of my lessons and am really happy at my placement as I want to become a hairdresser so it is helping me”.
Abigail from Hair Essentials added: “We are looking to integrate Amy as much as possible into the workplace, including dealing with the customers. It is really important for young people like Amy who need that additional support to be able to come into the workplace and obtain the skills that they will need to work in the future”.
